The last time I took a picture of the Kentish countryside from a train carriage, it was a snowy, grey landscape. Now the scene couldn't be more different, with vibrant colours and blue skies (tricking me into thinking I can get away with less layers than usual). So why don't I feel more summery and light-hearted? I guess it's because it's the time of year when deadlines suddenly become real again and not a distant thought you've been putting off all Christmas, It's not warm enough to want to be outdoors yet, and my birthday is over (I'm aware this last one is only affecting me). In sum, I may possibly have the January blues. Luckily January ends today.... so bring on Fun February? I can only hope!

I made this video because of my love of make-up and general body art. It took me sooo long so I hope you all enjoy it :)
Well, what can I say about this image? I'm easily entertained by shiny, colourful things and I like making innuendos to do with balls. That's pretty much it. I hope you've all had a fantastic weekend! I, myself have decided to start jogging and think i might have died at least three times.
"It is as though he [the Trickster] were hiding meaningful contents under an unprepossessing exterior" 1 (Jung, "Four Archetypes", p.177) "The Trickster is an archetype, who has a playful yet mischievious personality. Psychologist Jung talks of archetypes as a genetic build up that we are all born with, and therefore the Trickster is withing all of us. Those of us who deny this natural urge to trick and make fun of the serious end up with the Trickster becoming more and more dominant in their unconscious . This can result in out-of-character behaviour, or even a shadow/nightmare version of the Trickster to appear in our dreams or projected onto others. There is a secret attraction and fascination with dark fantasy worlds and by wearing the Trickster mask, that I propose through my collection, we are allowed to step into that world and be someone else, as well as learn more about ourselves in the present." Last Thursday I went to the Brighton University work-in-progress fashion exhibition. The text above is the outline of Elizabeth Russel's intriguing project which she intends to display in its completed form next summer in both Brighton and London. She is designing a line of male clothing based around this intricate character of the trickster. The doll on the above and on the right is her creative interpretation of this archetype. It was a great exhibition and shows a whole load of potential on what is to come next summer! If you want to keep up with Elizabeth Russel's work, or are interested in her art in general, then check out her blog: www.elizabethrussel.weebly.com Day 62, Image 62: 303 Images to go. Every time I see this road in the day I keep meaning to take a photo of it. I like the way the student accommodation layers up like that in the background, like little lego houses. I've even tried taking photos of similar shots elsewhere, only to realise it just isn't as good as the view I get from the bottom of this road, or I've tried to take this shot at night, meaning it just looked a bit sinister. Either way, I've finally got round to taking this shot, it's a view that I've always liked and even better, it's a teensy weensy bit sunny! After the five minutes of daylight we got today, and the fact that the gloomiest day of the year (it was yesterday, officially!) has been and gone. I'm getting pretty excited at the thought of summer arriving. I may even splash out on some more dreadful Primarni Sunglasses in celebration. I went for en evening walk today in search for inspiration as my day of uni work, the library and my lecture hall had been far from artistically beautiful. And walking down the back roads that lead into town, nothing really jumped out at me. Then I saw this shop and half smiled at the fact that it looks like the poor building's never even caught sight of a party in it's life. Or if it did, it it was the most depressing party anyone could ever attend. Especially with a sorry-looking Principal Meats sitting next to it like an old man in a club. And to be honest with you, it's probably the closest I'm going to get to any form of partytime this term judging from the amount of work I've had recently! And that's why this brave little shop has made it into todays' entry.
Because this blog is so personal to what I do and see everyday, it's bound to get caught up in what I'm interested in at particular points of the year. At the moment my new fascination is body art and modification. My obsession with tattoos has grown recently thanks to a present I got for Christmas: Kat Von D's new book, which depicts tattoos this talented (and absolutely stunning) lady has done throughout the space of about a year. It isn't a million miles away to what I do with my blog and her interpretations of the tattoos she has done makes me realise the deep emotional connection between the people and her art, making my fascination even greater. And yes, she is my female crush.
Moving on... this obsession is what has been motivating me to try some more tattoo-design based drawings, such as the above drawing inspired by a swallow tattoo I found, to which I added my own branch-like pattern and changed the composition. There is a celebration in Mexico called "Day of the Dead" where family and friends gather around to remember those they have lost. The festival aims to celebrate the life of the dead as opposed to mourning their loss and these ornate skulls, usually decorated with flowers and ribbons, is a symbol of this. By this action it is almost as though they are bringing their loved ones back to life to dine and celebrate with them at the table. I like the idea of this celebration, ans it's what inspired my Day-of-the-Dead inspired skecth above.
As you may have noticed I haven't uploaded any photos since the 31st. Now I might be flattering myself but I imagine that most of you are devastated and confused about this, but never fear! I have still been capturing images of my days, travels and activities for your pleasure, I just haven't had the means to upload them for a while. So, to make up for this I have done this massive entry containing all the photos from the past nine days, I hope this reassures you and fills you with joy. The two landscape images above are taken in London, but the different compositions , mean that the houses take on a different effect. In the first one, the rows of houses stand out because of the angular, uniform architecture contrasts with the pale sky, whereas the second one emphasises the bright greens and blues of the countryside, with the town in the background appearing like a different world, separated from the foreground by it's sombre colours. The photograph on the right was taken on New Year's Eve and it is one of the many Chinese lanterns that lit up the dark sky that night, giving the night a magical fairytale feel (albeit with a distinctive smell of alcohol and weed.) The two photos above are some recent art pieces of mine. I have been practicing faces particularly and feel that I have improved in drawing eyes greatly since. The second is a pen "tattoo" I drew into skin (again with my fascination of the skin as a canvas). I drew it onto my model's chest and the words read "The heart is an organ of fire". The image on the left are the sparks flying off of a fountain-style firework we set off in the back garden (this isn't the first time this has happened) and I'm a sucker for bright lights against a night sky contrast. The Image underneath this one was taken in a park in London and it immediately jumped out at me when we walked past the pond. The sun shining through the branches onto the water was too good a photographic opportunity to miss, and the result is one of my personal favourites yet! The above photo is a bold image of a power station in London. I like it purely because it is simple, yet the building looks intimidating despite this simplicity. The photo on the left is the remains of my New Year's resolutions after we decided the burn them. The meaning of this photo is more symbolic than aesthetic. There you have it, nine photos in one entry! And I promise never to abandon you like that again! |
